Our roots began to spread in 1960, with the sponsorship
of Senior Community Services. Our original senior citizens club was
named the Upper Tonka North Shore Senior Citizens Club, later became
the Mound Senior Citizens Club, then the Westonka Senior Citizens, Inc.
and finall just The Gillespie Center.
The Gillespie Center was built with the help of
donations from our entire community... friends, families, civic groups,
church groups, school staff and organizations, businesses, the cities
of Mound, Minnetrista and Spring Park, and our own membership. We would
never have made our goal of $3,500,000 had it not been for the
incredible matching funds of $5 to every dollar by our friend and
benefactor, Bill Gillespie through The Gillespie Family Fund of The
Minneapolis Foundation. Our beautiful building is the focal point for
quality senior citizens programs and services, but also is a community
center. It is used for weddings, celebrations, banquets, business
seminars, and other events.
Our center is a place where all are welcome. It is a
place where you can remain visible and involved in the community. Our
aim is to present programs broad enough for everyone. Our services and
programs include: daily nutritional meals, transportation, health and
wellness screenings and programs, social and recreational events and
trips, educational and enrichment opportunities, tax assistance,
counseling and case management helping people to remain independent,
information and referral, advocacy and friendship.
We totally own and operate our own building with the
continued help of our Westonka Community with tax-deductible donations
and support of all of our many fundraisers. We are proud to be a part
of the community and think that is a wonderful place to live.
